    Q: What are you reading?

A: I do most of my reading online. I faithfully read industry news articles and e-newsletters, such as Market Watch, Digital Commerce 360 and Stores Magazine through the National Retail Federation. Flipboard also keeps me up-to-date on current events, business news and new technology. I am always researching new digital technology to implement into our new store, Vegas EXP, which is at the Grand Bazaar Shops.

  • 2015 | Indian Tribes look beyond casinos for income

ATHENS, Mich. — For now, the field isn’t much. All that stands along a quiet country road is a small storage building, beyond which rolls 28 acres of prairie a mile south of this blink-and-miss-it hamlet. To Mon-ee Zapata, though, this land is both the past and the future.

As denoted on a historical marker across the street, this is the vicinity where, 175 years ago, the United States government rounded up her ancestors, the Potawatomi Indians, and forced them on a deadly walk to inhospitable Kansas. But it is also a place where her tribal elders plan to build a manufacturing operation of some sort as a way to ensure their long-term economic stability beyond the revenue from the six-year-old FireKeepers Casino.

KINGMAN - When Dawnielle Tehama announced in August that the Grand Canyon Resort Corp. was seeking more community interaction, she wasn't kidding about the company's intent to reach out to the city of Kingman.

Tehama, who is GCRC's marketing manager, said then that she and Jennifer Turner, the company's new chief executive officer, were moving quickly to build relationships with the leaders and businesses in Kingman.

They shared their calendar of events, including filming at its tourist destinations, and began referring participants in those activities to Kingman so they could dine, stay in hotels and purchase items in the city.

In short, the company decided to join hands with the city for the good of both entities.

"We've changed our business model because of new leadership," said Tehama at the time. "We're taking a different approach this year and are seeking a lot more community interaction. We have a lot of people coming through and we are referring them to Kingman now. We're a firm believer that if you support the local community, you're supporting yourself."

    January 20, 2014

    By Doug McMurdo/kdminer.com

KINGMAN - A lawsuit filed in Hualapai Tribal Court earlier this month alleges, among other things, that directors of the Grand Canyon Resort Corporation and its officers conspired to break a contract with Western Destinations owner Jim Brown, the builder and manager of Hualapai Ranch.

This is the second instance in which the resort corporation has been formally accused of failing to honor its contracts with non-tribal business partners in Grand Canyon West, but the lawyer who filed the lawsuit on Brown's behalf could not say for certain if a pattern has developed.

Tucson-based attorney Ali Farhang did suggest, however, that a growing history of breaking contracts with business partners would come back to haunt the Hualapai Tribe.

  • 2013 | Grand Canyon West remains open despite the partial Gov't Shutdown

    Oct. 2, 2013

    By Joshua Noble

With the partial Government shutdown looming on indefinitely, visitors have been asking what they can do to see the Grand Canyon.  Our answer: Grand Canyon West!

Grand Canyon West is owned and operated by the Hualapai Indian Tribe. It is an internationally known tourist destination that includes 108 miles of the Grand Canyon’s West Rim. And it is not affected by the Federal Government's funding situation.

Don't forget that Northern Arizona has many natural attractions not affected by the Government partial shutdown. Including Grand Canyon West, the Hualapai River Runners (the only one days Grand Canyon River rafting experience), Grand Canyon Caverns, Bearizona, Meteor Crater and the red rocks of Sedona. So don't let the closing of the National Parks end your stay on Route 66 in Arizona!

The Grand Canyon Skywalk, a glass-bottomed walkway that juts out over the canyon’s edge for a view of the Colorado River 4,000 feet below, is built on stable ground. The finances of the Indian tribe-owned corporation that had it built in 2007, however, are a bit shakier.

The Hualapai (pronounced wall-a-pie) Tribe put the corporation that owns the skywalk into bankruptcy protection on Monday after losing a court battle against Las Vegas developer David Jin, who was hired to build and manage the Arizona tourist attraction in 2003.
